Something about me-
And I asked me what are my talents?
Neither am I a painter, nor a poet
Nor a sculptor, nor a writer
And though I live to music and
For music I do not play it.

Jul. 8th, 2008 @ 09:49 pm Evening report, with cat pix and flix
Just now: accomplished
After work today, I headed down to the Animal Care Center on South Campbell to visit with Diva, the orange moggie I will be adopting on Friday. I took some photos; here's the Flickr set. While there I asked the vet about her background. Apparently she used to belong to a family, and they had boarded her with the vet, then for whatever reason not been able to pick her back up again. (The vet suggested they might not have been able to pay their boarding fee, but he didn't sound too certain about that, and I would hate to think that a boarded pet might get "repossessed" for nonpayment. Makes me feel kind of dirty.)

I also took some low-rez cellphone videos, which I have put on YouTube.

Diva #1: Enter Diva )

Diva #2: The Laser Pointer )

Diva #3: Exploring )

After that, I headed over to Wal-Mart to check their pet supplies, and to look at snagging a few things like towels for liners for the cats' beds. I was disheartened to find that even their cheapest towel was $2.75. I did see a decent-looking cat tower for $35; the only problem being you have to assemble it yourself. I'm a bit hesitant to consider something like that for fear of what might happen if it turns out not to be sturdy enough. Benjamin is going to be a pretty heavy cat. After that, I headed on over to PetSmart to take a look at their pet stuff. There were some great pre-made tall "cat condos" there—and I really want to get a tall one, for Benjamin to climb on—but they were all in the $100 plus range and I'm not sure I can afford that.

I was going to go up to Bed, Bath, and Beyond to see what their towels cost, but first I checked out the local Deal$. (Or, as I like to call it, "Deal String") At first I wasn't too sure I'd find anything worthwhile; ever since they stopped being an "everything $1 or less" store and turned into an "everything $5 or less" store it's been a bit hard to be sure you're getting as good a deal as you hope you are. They had some towels for $3—even worse than Wal-Mart's. But then I noticed something in the next aisle over, and discovered some wonderfully soft 30" x 30" baby blankets for $1 each. So I bought four of them: one for each cat bed, and a spare for when I'm laundering the first ones. Two of them say "Giddy-Up" with a little horseshoe or "Ride 'em Cowboy" with a little cowboy hat, the other two of have what is either a dog or a cow standing on a little circus pedestal with one leg in the air and juggling, but I'm sure the cats won't mind. I also picked up some ceramic food/water dishes and a Hamtaro DVD, among other things.

In Deal$'s grocery section, I saw something I could not resist photographing: some cheap Oriental instant noodles with rather…interesting packaging.

I didn't get much shopping done tonight, or any room cleaning either, but I guess that can wait for tomorrow. I don't have too much more to do—just shove everything out of the way, vacuum, and spray.

In some more annoying news, I dropped off about six sets of negatives at Walgreens today for transfer to a photo DVD. They charged me $42 bucks for it—but when I got it back home and put it in my drive, I found it only had about one roll's worth of prints on it. I'm going back tomorrow morning to give them what for. In the meanwhile, I went ahead and uploaded what photos there were to Flickr (along with a bunch of photos I'd been meaning to transfer up from my cellphone for quite a while).

Well, off to have some dinner and then crash in bed.

Jul. 8th, 2008 @ 07:48 pm Enable moderated posting for moderators

Title
Enable moderated posting for moderators

Short, concise description of the idea
In a community with moderated posting, community moderators jump the moderation queue. This is not always desired. ;)

Full description of the idea
When a community has moderated posting, anyone with community moderator powers do not have their posts put into the moderation queue, even if they do not have the "unmoderated posting" tickybox ticked. This is not always a desired result, especially when someone has moderator powers because they get to reject posts, and all posts are supposed to be approved by a different moderator before they actually go through.

It would be nice if posting behavior for moderators (and even maintainers) obeyed the "Unmoderated" tickybox. They could then approve their own posts immediately, if desired, but they could also leave them in the moderation queue.

An ordered list of benefits
  • Fewer cranky moderators who didn't mean to post that without review.
  • More intuitive user interface.
  • User interface does what it says it's doing.
  • Could also be used to create delayed posts from a maintainer or moderator, to be released by someone else with moderation powers.
An ordered list of problems/issues involved
  • May be more work than it is a benefit.
  • Changes the behavior of something that's been in place for a while.
  • Moderators who may have been used to being able to jump the queue may not be granted that power by maintainers, resulting in cranky moderators.

Jul. 8th, 2008 @ 10:06 pm Scrapbook link in layouts

Title
Scrapbook link in layouts

Short, concise description of the idea
The Scrapbook gallery page could be linked in standard journal layouts, along with Recent Entries, Friends, Profile, and Archive.

Full description of the idea
The gallery is another part of the journal, but it is currently linked only from the profile, while other journal pages can be accessed through the journal itself. I think Scrapbook should get a promotion :)

An ordered list of benefits
  • Greater visibility for the Scrapbook feature in general
  • People who want to share their pictures can expect that their readers will be likely to find them, which is not currently the case.
  • People who are looking for the pictures can find them more easily.
An ordered list of problems/issues involved
  • Could take a lot of trouble to add an extra link to every system layout.

Jul. 8th, 2008 @ 09:58 pm link to "manage tags" and "manage link list" in journal

Title
link to "manage tags" and "manage link list" in journal

Short, concise description of the idea
Letting the journal owner view links to these Manage pages from the relevant areas of the journal would make managing them more convenient.

Full description of the idea
The "manage tags" page would be easier to find if it were linked from the in-journal tag list and from exampleusername.livejournal.com/tag/. The same goes for the link list management page, which doesn't even have a direct link from the site scheme menus.

An ordered list of benefits
  • Ease and convenience
An ordered list of problems/issues involved
  • Time and effort
  • Some people might not want those links cluttering their layouts, even if they would only be visible to the journal owner.

Just now: hungry
Today has mostly sucked. It sucked ass, to be precise. I got bit three seperate times (thankfully none breaking the skin) by freak-dogs. I got slammed into a kennel by a 75 lb standard poodle that has decided to have MASSIVE KENNEL PHOBIA OF DOOM. I literally slammed my head into the kennels giving myself a bad headache. By the time I was done fighting him into the kennel I was completely out of breath (like I'd run a marathon) and was dripping sweat. I had to deal with OMGTHESTUPID people all day... and then I had to put a baby house gecko out of his misery. While I was dragging stuff around the salon it seems the poor baby was under some of the stuff I had to drag. It tore him up pretty bad but didn't kill him and I had to put him down. I couldn't let him suffer any more. So I broke his neck and laid him to rest. :/ It was horribly sad but if I had any hope of him making it I would have rehabbed him. He was just too damaged. ;;

So... tonight I shall counter-act my day of massive suck by making homemade lasagna. Yes, I realize I'm not starting until like 10pm tonight which makes it ready to eat around midnight... but Paul won't be home until 10, after I pick him up, so it's late dinner night.

By homemade I mean -completely- homemade (except for the canned tomato sauce/paste that is the base for my Ragu... because I'll be freaking damned if I know how to make tomato sauce (I'm assuming it's pureed tomato's...) and I'm already making the rest of the sauce myself so NEENER!) I'm a little distraught over the fact that they seemed to have missed bagging my red-bell peppers. :/ So I'll have to go without the pepper part... but it'll still be good. I'm hoping that the peppers fell out in the car.

Anyhow, homemade lasagna tonight. Did I mention I'm winging most of the recipe? This is gonna be fun. :D The good news is that no matter how weird it ends up being I can just claim the fact that 'lasagna' refers to the type of noodles used and not the multi-layer, thick, saucy, cheesy, food most people link 'lasagna' to... even if that is the food I'm shooting for. :p

Yeah, wish me luck lol

Just now: awed
Oh my god. [info]justbeast's parents have the most amazing stories.

Tonight, over catfish and fried bread, we were treated to the tale of how V. as a very young man worked as a dolphin researcher on a barren island in the black sea, and how he and his fellow researchers were so hungry, Odessa being very far away, that they tried to catch one of the wild horses that roamed on the island by trapping it in their house. It ran around in circles wrecking everything until someone tried to catch it by the tail, at which point the tail ripped off and the horse jumped out the door. They also traded the gunpowder that they dug up from the bottom of the Black Sea aremoved from shells for milk and flour in town.

V. met T., [info]justbeast's mother, because the university let the young biologists spend the winter on the medical school campus--sharing a room with the cadavers. In the summer, she went with him to the island, to cavort among pink-eyed phosphorescent shrimp and jellyfish. She arrived to meet him on a ship with crimson sails called Dream.

Really.

[info]justbeast and pere adjourned to make coffee as T. began to talk about the old days in Russia. She told me exactly how a KGB officer would come and how they would get information from wives about husbands--so friendly, so innocuous: just tell us, we already know, it doesn't reflect on you at all. About living under Brezhnev--when he began, there was caviar in every store, but no one had any money to buy it, and when he ended, there was nothing to buy, but everyone had a full refrigerator, because everyone had learned how to steal.

But what killed me was how they talked about that barren island, and the stars, and the phosphorescence, about young men sneaking off with lovers into mosquito-infested weeds, about loving the taste of fried bread so much when you had had nothing all day, working in the sea. About how young they were, and how romantic, how little they knew about the world, that summer in the sea. And T. saying, as I poured my last vodka: all I ever wanted to bring with me to America was the smell of sea-grass on that island.

Life is so strange and beautiful and varied.

There are times when I am so grateful to know these people.

Jul. 8th, 2008 @ 07:32 pm Nontheistic Christianity (xposted)
I stumbled across these essays and I could not stop reading them.

I suspect that any atheist (or agnostic) who has ever rankled at the idea that atheism is "just another religion" might rankle at them... but as I plowed through them, I saw a great many accurate assessments of the state of affairs.

It is worth your while to read them.

Make the security option drop-down on update.bml ("Show this entry to") aware of which journal/community you're posting to. This includes:
1. Select the option that corresponds to the minsecurity that's set on the journal, and disable the other "less secure" options.
2. When posting to a community (either via ?usejournal= or the drop-down of communities), change the list of options to remove private and custom.
